I have been working on re-organizing the store since last fall.

Right around the holidays, I finalized a design that I think works to do everything we wanted.

I hope everyone has a chance to come and see the changes when they are complete.

Your challenge is to bring us art (for the walls, wearable, or 3-D) you’ve made from items that would otherwise be headed to the recycling or trash.*

*please, nothing stinky or slimy… that is what your compost pile is for!

Canvas rack

I was trying to decide how to make the canvas rack that we have able to hold more canvas...
maybe even make it look nice...

After too much struggle, I remembered the phrase "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear",
and decided to put it out of it's misery. :)

Everything we have fits much more smoothly in this rack.
Ok I'll admit the Really big stuff isn't in the rack, (and there is more canvas on the way), but we will always find room for more product!

What is the GIFT SHOW?
We are looking for new art. (That Artists Mediums has not shown before)
Small-ish/reasonably priced works, that you think folks may want to purchase to give as gifts during the holiday season.

The rules are simple..this is a public place so keep it PG, if it isn't safe to hang, we'll refuse it...

This will be the last show, during which we will still be taking only a 20% commission.
(Begining in February 2012, we will have to start taking 30% commission.)

Whether it’s an old family photo or a piece of old lace; we’ve all felt the presence of someone long gone when we encounter their things - the imprint they leave behind after possessing an object for a long period of time. These objects once had owners. They were bought and sold, made and broken. Some of them were kept and treasured, while others were forgotten in attics.

Each has a story to tell. This workshop will teach you the basics needed to construct a box assemblage that speaks the ghost stories of the past.

This beautiful, three-dimensional book is sure to capture the imagination! Don’t let this book’s appearance fool you – it’s much easier to create than it looks.
In this workshop, participants will create a star book made from layers of paper and collage materials. The book opens up completely to form a star shape when the covers are held back-to-back. You can use the attached ribbon ties to secure the book when open or closed.
In this workshop, each participant will leave class with a completed book and a basic knowledge of bookbinding technique. You will receive a detailed handout and resource list for all materials we use. No previous experience required – this is a great class for all skill levels. Non-artists, teachers, photographers, and all creative types are welcome!

All materials are included in the workshop fee, but feel free to bring materials for use in creating a theme/concept for the book.

Past the half-way point and into the wee hours of morning

It's just 3 a.m. as I check in here...

We've dwindled to a small group, but Jim Gorman is the first to have completed his 24 page story, and is getting ready to start another. Yep, he's going to try and keep his original goal of getting two 24 page stories down on paper in one 24-hour session. That's twenty-four pages in six hours if he can do it. Jim wins his pick of the Canson Fanboy prizes either way.

Rocky's Pizza arrived with fresh fresh pizza pie earlier this evening, which is a wonderful motivator year after year (Thanks John & crew!) the box of snack treats from Sweet Clover Market is a never-ending treasure-trove (I'm now hooked on orange & rosemary flavored pecans...) Delicious coffee from Phoenix Books & Cafe has lasted us these past eighteen hours. We tip our hats to you all!

Artists' Mediums Inc was very lucky to be completely unscathed by the recent flooding here in Vermont.

This was part of my drive to work monday -chels

Many others were not nearly so lucky, as several towns are still unaccessable, and many are still without power.

There are lots of ways to help:

Today, (wed. Aug 31st) a family in Pittsfield reported that they bought the last loaf of bread at the market. IF YOU ARE IN OR AROUND RUTLAND, PLEASE DROP OFF SUPPLIES AT Restoring Rutland ~ 34 STRONGS AVENUE FROM 9AM-9PM. These supplies will be delivered to Mendon, Killington, and Pittsfield. Families are eager to get more water, baby food and formula, diapers, dog food, cleaning supplies, etc. Any help is appreciated. Thank you all.

Gelatin Monotype Printing Class

Ages 15 and up, $80.00 per student. Sign ups required by October 24th.

Gelatin monotype printing is a fun and easy way to access the monotype process without using a press. Textures appear sharp and colors stay vivid as the artist pulls beautiful, “painterly,”one-of-a-kind prints.

We will be using water-based inks and paints; feel free to bring your favorites. Carol will demonstrate techniques using brayers and tools to achieve the images. Gelatin printing is versatile way to make art and a unique way to create beautiful holiday greeting cards or gifts. Your cost for the class includes the gelatin printing plate, which you get to keep. Experience is helpful but not necessary. Some materials and tools provided.

Printmaking vs Etching press monotype printmaking

1. No etching press needed. If you already have an etching press, it's a way you can print when you away from home. It's a great way to work on serious art and explore monotype techniques and tools without the expense and bother of a press(space, maintenance, limitations).

2. Non-toxic and safe. If you like working with water-based, non-toxic media, this gets you away from any toxic solvents. If you have children in the house and a studio in it, here's a way to safely work around them.

3. Versatile. The plate can be made any size or any shape you wish. It is reuseable for weeks. When the surface gets "tired", you can cut the plate into pieces, melt it in the microwave, let it set up in the fridge and start fresh in a day.

4. Fast set-up. Since you store the plate in the fridge, you just need to get it out and start working. With zinc and plexiglas, you need to clean and dry the plates after working to preserve them. To clean the gelatin plate, you need only spray it with water and blot away any remaining ink and paint. Let it stay damp, cover with plastic and refrigerate; ready to use next time.

5. Rainy day adult/child activity. Make your own greeting cards, bookmarks, etc., just pull out of fridge and get out those water-soluble paints/inks...a fun afternoon.

6. Small studio activity. All you need is a refrigerator, a spray bottle, and the kitchen table.

7. The plate is the press. This is useful when working in groups. Usually, there is a line to get to the etching press, but in this case, everyone has a plate and can work at their own pace.

8. Ease of use, unique surface from other types of plates. You adapt to pressing the paper very gently on the surface. The gelatin has a useful property of bonding the damp paper to itself. The give of the gelatin surface is responsive. Surface offers superior texture and color saturation, for example, you see the tiny veins in a leaf, not just the big ones. Colors transfers are vivid on paper; if you applied heavily saturated color on the plate, you will get it on the paper. Sometimes on zinc or plexi, ink resists transfer...so that is an added bonus of gelatin.

Materials needed and can be purchased at Artists Mediums include:
printmaking paper (Stonehenge)
brayers for rolling ink and paint
spray bottle for water
your favorite water-based paints (acrylic inks, liquid acrylic paints, water based monotype inks)
palette knives, trowel style preferred(stainless steel or plastic are fine) for stamping shapes and mixing colors
disposable latex gloves (if you have latex allergies, please bring non-latex if needed)
scrap glass and cardboard backing to make a palette (at least 16" x 20")
stencil paper/plastic(Yupo and film papers are sturdy)

Other items to bring (some you may already have) include:
scissors, tweezers, forceps, rags
scrap fabrics and papers for creating textures(grocery net bags, plastic or paper doilies, small craft stencils, etc.)
rubber stamps can work, but not letters, which will come out backwards.

Artists’ Mediums will provide:
extra tables or drying racks or space for each student's finished works and works in progress,
Plain newsprint sheets or old newspapers for testing and as a background for rolling ink onto stencils and for laying prints on while working on them.

At least it wasn't Stop, Drop, and Roll!

Contemplative browsing was interrupted today at the shop when the fire alarm went off, and WOW is it loud. Nice to know it works the way it's supposed to! As I escorted our customers out, we found ourselves congregating on the walkway with clients of the day spa next door in their smocks and bathrobes (what a day to have picked for a massage or hair coloring...)

Thanks to all the patient ladies who waited outside with me, especially to June for her good humor...we were able to finish our transaction on the front steps, my cousin Victoria for her patience as her framing order was interrupted multiple times, and to Karen Lloyd and all the folks who came in after the all clear was sounded, you were great! (especially as we had to endure the fire alarm being reset...)

And of course, a big thank you to the Williston Fire Department (our nearby neighbors) who came out in force and investigated. I'm not sure what the actual cause for the alarm was, but we're all glad it wasn't serious.

Next time I want to get fresh air during the day, though, I think I'll just open the window.

This workshop will have you gluing, cutting, painting and tearing up old books to create 3 dimensional works of art.We will break all rules set into place by librarians and school teachers who told you books were meant to be kept on shelves. This class will offer you a space to freely develop your own personal narrative with found objects; transforming ordinary pages of text into something mythical and profound, using something as simple as an old book as your base. We will bravely enter into creative new territories in this process oriented class.

Artists' Mediums Inc. is proud to offer a workshop by Nancy Stone Watercolor on Yupo Paper Saturday, November 12th from 11-3 p.m. $75.00 per student, beginner to advanced, ages 16 and up. Prepayed sign-ups required by October 15th.

Maybe you’ve heard of it but never tried it! Here’s your chance to discover the creative possibilities of YUPO, the “first ever erasable watercolor paper” that never needs soaking, stretching or taping and can be “erased” down to the original flawless white. The material is PH neutral and 100% recyclable & tree/pulp free.

The class will start with demonstrations and a mini-art show of Nancy’s YUPO paintings. Then, class members will move to different stations to playfully explore tools and techniques, followed by work-time for one or two paintings that will incorporate the varied possibilities just tried. The session will conclude with Show-and-Tell so we can learn from one another’s’ discoveries.

Nancy Stone is a Signature Member of the Vermont Watercolor Society. She has taught art in Minnesota, the VT Commons School, the Community College of Vermont and Williston Central School, where she was honored as Vermont’s Outstanding Art Educator. Her paintings on YUPO have been in numerous juried shows, winning several awards. In 2009, she was invited to speak on the wonders of YUPO to the VT Watercolor Society.

I had a sable brush with oil paint dried rock hard - into the bristles, I figured out a way to suspend the brush in a tall vase, with JUST the bristles suspended in a mix of this soap and some water, and after soaking for several days, I was able to gently brush out the paint with a toothbrush! MAKE YOUR OWN- Handpainted Shoes by Kristin

Do you have an old pair of shoes lying around that could be a bit more...interesting? Kristin found a great and very simple way to revive old shoes!

What you need:
-Paint Brush(es): You can use a variety of paint brushes to work with textile paints. Usually it's easier to work with a nice soft brush that maintains its shape for creating designs. The Holbein Hard Resable brush works perfectly for this! This brush is soft, yet holds a nice point, and holds a good amount of paint to help you make clean and flowing lines.
-Jacquard Textile Paint: These paints are designed for fabric and will work great on most shoes. They come in many different colors and are very flexible when dried.

Hints:
-Clean the shoes thoroughly before hand. A mild soap and water solution will work just fine.
-Do not apply large globs of paint, these might crack off in time. Thin and even layers will last longer.
-You can heat-set the fabric paint with a heat gun (be careful not to burn the shoes) or you can use a blow dryer on the "high" setting.

Hi, it's Kristin, and I'm excited to report that I'm taking a silk screening class at BCA over the next month. This is a method I have dabbled in over the past few years, but never received formal instruction for.

The fee is $10.00 per person for one 8” pot. Once you have finished your painted flowerpot, we will seal the outside of it for you-with exterior quality clear coat, to preserve your garden art. MAKE AND TAKE: is a new Activity/Event for the store, we hope you enjoy these offerings! For a three day period and a minimal fee (per day) you’ll have access to selected materials and finished samples to reference as you complete your creation. We are keeping the fees low as these projects are self guided, although our artists/ employees would be willing to offer tips & suggestions if desired. Lots of fun supplies will be on hand. Our first Make and Take will be:

SHOW RULES (AND FORMS-below)

1.) Art is accepted on a first come first serve basis, something that hasn't shown here previously. Our shows will be displayed for three months and centered on a theme.

HANGING ART: Due to our public environment, ALL work must be “PG,” ready to hang on the wall safely, and there are some space limitations. (NO WIRELESS frames, if we are not confident in the safety of the hanging system - it will be refused.)
Depending on size and available space we can often take 3-5 pieces of hanging art.
For the gift show we will probably want more work since the it is smaller.

CARDS: ALL CARDS must be labelled with price, artist's name, and descritpion/or numbering system -as well being listed individually on the WAIVER FORM.
Card Space is Limited so only 3-5 Facings per artist (for example: 3 Designs, 3-5 of each max- if all your cards are different we can accept no more than 15 total, and again there will only be 3 slots allocated per artist, until the racks are full.)
3-D ART/ Jewelry etc: We prefer to take art into the sotre that is made with some of the products that we sell here in the store. (Or at least from a customer we recognize as a regular customer.) If your art can be handled by the public, then we can display this work on a shelf or our display tables. I do ask you to sign a waiver, so I am not responsible for loss or damage, though that has not been a problem for us.
After Thanksgivign during the Gift show there will be a Tree- on which we can display ornaments and really small art.
There is also some space available in our glass cabinets for 3-D artwork, limited by size and availability, feel free to call and ask if the space is full yet. Usually I try to allow diplays approximately 12" -16" square per customer..but when the case is full we have to stop accepting art.

2.) Begining in February 2012, we will be taking a 30% commission. Money is paid to the artists only at show's end when artwork is picked up.

3.) Completed forms MUST accompany delivered artwork. We REQUIRE that you fill out (LISTING EVERY PIECE OF ART INDIVIDUALLY) and sign a Waiver of Liability. If this form is not filled out, we will loan you a pen. If you cannot print this form, you can stop by the store for a copy of the paperwork.

4.) ALL ART MUST HAVE a TAG that includes the artists name, price, and title, or number, if there are several. If the art is a piece of jewelry or something very small, you can make a smaller tag, but it still has to be listed seperately on your form, and contain the same information as you would find on a large tag.
If you do not have labels for cards or jewelry, we will ask you to return when you have them.

5.) Drop off's /pick ups -need to be made during store hours, within one week of the begining/end of each show. We are primarily a retail art store, and must assist the shopping customers first and foremost.
We are not responsible for providing labels or filling out your paperwork, although we are glad to explain any parts you do not understand.

(Please note that we do not have storage space to store artwork outside of the show dates. Artwork left 30 days past the end date of the show will be charged a $5.00 storage fee. Artwork left over 60 days past the show end date will be donated to a local charity.)

Fresh from Colorado!

Chelsea has just returned from a trip to CO which included a visit with Terry Ludwig of Terry Ludwig Pastels (and yes, we'll have these in the shop soon!) When she's settled back in, we'll have some pictures from her tour of the factory. Until then, here's a bit of background:

"Frustrated with the lack of color options available and few choices for very soft pastels, Terry Ludwig began experimenting with formulas for making his own pastels in 1995.

His goal: create a vast array of color in pastels that were uniformly soft across all densities of hue.

His result: over 500 intense colors, some of which are unavailable elsewhere, in a unique square pastel.

Crafting each pastel with a broad range of pigments by hand with minimal natural binders renders highly concentrated, velvety pastels. The square shape delivers thick, broad strokes and thin, precise lines where necessary."
