Science Meets Art at Artists’ Mediums

Bob Arns is a nuclear physicist with a hidden talent.  For the last six decades, the UVM Professor Emeritus has been creating artwork under the alias Mutin.  On March 5, the intersection of science and art will be on display as Artists’ Mediums in Williston holds a reception for Arns’ first solo show.
Initially Arns did his painting clandestinely, worried that it might detract from his reputation as a scientist, but of late he has become willing to shed some light on his artistic side.  This show is the first time he has allowed his work to be shown in public.  Arns’ paintings run the gamut from abstract to representational and include both oils and acrylics. His subject matter ranges from portraiture to flowers, birch trees and sunsets in Maine, but his most recent compositions consist of images inspired by the Hubble telescope.  There are five paintings in this series and it is an area that Arns continues to explore.
“I’m really pleased and honored to have Bob’s show at my store,” said Artists’ Mediums owner Chelsea Lindner.  “I love this exhibit.  Each of these works is impressive.  They cover several styles and subjects, but there is a flow through each grouping of canvases.  It’s wonderful to come to work and be able to enjoy them.”
The reception will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on March 5.  Light snacks and beverages will be served.  Arns’ paintings will be on display at Artists’ Mediums through the end of April.  More of his work can be seen at Mutinvt.com

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: GWENDOLYN EVANS

We are excited to announce our first Artist in Residence: Gwendolyn Evans. She will be creating art here at Artists’ Mediums over the course of several afternoons (dates below). This is a great opportunity to see her artistic process first hand and ask any questions you may have.

Gwendolyn Evans is an artist and muse who happens to be blind.

In 1996, Gwendolyn was introduced to the world of polymer clay and with no prior artistic experience she began creating sculptures of goddesses.  Since that time, Gwendolyn has exhibited her work in a number of galleries and exhibits, including the juried “Engage” exhibit produced by VSA Vermont. Gwendolyn’s artwork is inspired by nature and spirit. It is mixed media work in clay, paper and acrylics featuring brilliant color and textures.  It is most often whimsical and impressionistic.  She enjoys sharing her artistic insight into the creative process and engaging in conversation about how she creates art without having sight.  Stop by and visit…
May 16th, 19th and 20th.

M. GRAHAM WATERCOLOR DEAL

Now is a GREAT time to try M. Graham watercolors or even add to your supply of them. While supplies last, buy any 3 tubes of M. Graham watercolors and get a FREE TUBE (choose from Cerulean Blue Deep, Azo Orange and Anthraquinone Blue)!
M. Graham Watercolor
What is so special about M. Graham? Well, it’s made in the tradition fashion- with honey! The combination of  honey, gum Arabic and water creates a fluid binding medium that provides a higher pigment load for intense saturation and incredible flow.
Personally, I tend to prefer M. Graham to other brands due to the longer working time and the fact that colors stay moist on your palette for many days, even weeks. They also have some very unique colors, such as Quinacridone Rust and Azo Green.
Although they are only available in the 15ml size, they are much more economical than other artist-grade brands, such as Winsor & Newton and Holbein. Plus, they are made in America!

Mandala Drawing Class

MANDALA DRAWING CLASSES:
In Sanskrit Mandala literally means circle or center.  Its traditional design
often utilizes the circle--symbol of the cosmos in its entirety--and the square--symbol
of the earth or of the man-made world.
The universality of the Mandala is in its one constant--the principle of the center.
It can represent the Mind of God or Eternal Potential or the Source from which all
proceeds.  Very simple, very profound.
     Drawing mandalas can be a very relaxing, therapeutic vehicle for self-expression;
a good way to get to know yourself better! It's all done with circles, symbols and shapes.
No specific artistic talent is needed to create a mandala!  If you can write your name,
you can create a mandala.

Each session will start with a short meditation to "get you in the mood".  There will be
some discussion of participant's mandalas, but only as you feel comfortable in doing so. There will be group projects and more individualized ones as we move along.
I have been known to give small amounts of "homework" for subjects that take more quiet reflection!

ADULT MANDALA CLASS: Ages 17 and up.
Creating our own personal Mandalas from scratch, we'll use colored pencils and pens for the most part, but for anyone wanting to try other media we will discuss that as well.

Instructor:  Sabina Evarts, Certified Art Teacher
Cost: $120. per person
Materials: 9x9 Deluxe Bee or similar square sketch book, sketch paper for testing ideas.
HB or 2B pencils, Prismacolor pencils, markers: black and colored markers, rulers 12" and shorter. (compass optional)
Six 2 hour sessions- for six weeks on Saturdays - September 14th, 21st,28th, Oct 5th, 12th, and 19th 2013 - from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

CHILDREN'S MANDALA CLASS: Ages 5-8
This class will teach children about "drawing in a circle or mandala".  Projects will be
chosen that best fit the personalities of the class.  Each one is different and special!
Using colored pencils, markers, stencils, IDEAS and WORDS, we'll explore both our
personal world and the BIG world out there!
Classes will begin with a short meditation to help everyone focus on what the mandala
wants to say.

Instructor:  Sabina Evarts, Certified Art Teacher
Cost: $60.  per person
Materials: Crayons, Colored Pencils, Markers Graphite pencil and eraser, and sketchbook
Four sessions 1 1/2  hours long, weekly - Tuesday's after school - September 10th, 17th, 24th and Oct. 1st from 4:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.

If you have further questions about what this class will entail: please call Sabina at (802) -985-4099.

Cleaning Brushes

Cleaning Brushes

Never rest brushes on their hairs. Always leave them flat or with the hairs upright. Keep brushes clean during the painting session and give them a thorough cleaning after the session. For water-based paints, switch back and forth between rinsing out with tap water and mildly soaped water. For oil and alkyd paints, use mineral spirits or turpentine in the same manner and finish up with mild soap or brush cleaner and water. Always reshape the brush when work is complete.

Here’s a tip for cleaning really big brushes often used in oil painting. Place an old wire colander in a gallon plastic ice cream bucket. Next, place both in a taller bucket with a lid. Fill the gallon bucket with paint thinner to cover the bristles. Swirl the brushes against the colander and then wipe off the excess with a rag. The big bucket catches any splashes.

Remember that solvents are toxic and should be disposed of as hazardous wastes.
